Firehawks Face Bears in MSC Quarterfinals

Bowling Green, Ky. - The field for the MSC quarterfinals being held at Bowling Green High School. Saturday will be an action packed day with four quarterfinal matchups.

OPENING ROUND RECAPS

5) Cumberlands 62 - 12) Lindsey Wilson 60

Cumberlands opened the game scoring 10 of the first 12 points. Lindsey Wilson then went on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 10-8. Leading 16-14, Cumberlands scored nine straight to lead 25-14 with under seven minutes to play in the half. The two teams traded threes to end the half as the Patriots led 33-27.

Lindsey Wilson went on a 6-2 run to trim the Patriots lead to 45-43 with 10:44 to play. The two teams continued to trade baskets over the next six minutes. Lindsey Wilson tied the game at 55 with 3:43 to play. Cumberlands then scored the next five points before the Blue Raiders responded with a 5-0 run to tie the game with 47 seconds left. Steven Fitzgerald won the game for Cumberlands with a basket with five seconds left.

Fitzgerald scored a game-high 21 points while Jahi Hinson and Austin Hall were the other Patriots in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Mark Edmond led the Blue Raiders with 13 points.

Cumberlands will now face No. 4 seed Cumberland (Tenn.) Saturday at 3 p.m. CT.

6)  Freed-Hardeman 101 - 11) Bethel 80

Freed-Hardeman trailed 11-10 in the first half before going on an 8-2 run to lead 18-13 with 11:16 to play in the half. The Lions took control of the game going on a 9-1 run to increase their lead to 43-31 at halftime. In the second half, Freed-Hardeman's lead would never go below nine points and would lead by as many as 23.

The Lions were led by Kortland Martin who scored a game-high 33 points. Freed-Hardeman had three other players in double figures. Wanya King scored 14 points, Ryley McClaran scored 13 and Jeremiah Alexander added 12. Bethel was led by Kamron Rose who scored a team-high 27 points.

Freed-Hardeman will face No. 3 seed Georgetown (Ky.) on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT.

 

7) Shawnee State 79 - 10) Life 66

Tied at six, Shawnee State went on a 14-3 run to lead 20-9 with 13:27 to play in the first half. The Bears took a 32-23 lead before the Running Eagles scored 11 of the next 13 points to tie the game at 34 with 1:55 in the half. Shawnee State scored the final four points of the half to lead 38-34.

The Bears jumped out in front in the second half with an 11-2 run to lead 49-36. Shawnee State would continue to lead for the rest of the game with the lead never going below eight points as they secured the 79-66 victory.

Isaac Abergut led the Bears with a game-high 19 points. Miles Thomas and Latavious Mitchell each had 15 points, Amier Gilmore added 12 and Donoven Carlisle had 11. Life was led by Chris Barnes and Cam Horton who each had 14 points.

Shawnee State will face second-seeded Tennessee Southern on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. CT.

 

8) Pikeville 75 - 9) Campbellsville 71

Leading 12-9, Pikeville went on a 10-4 run to increase its lead to 22-13 with eight minutes to play in the first half. Campbellsville had made it a 29-26 game with four minutes to play before the Bears scored 11 of the final 15 points in the half to lead 40-30 at half time.

Pikeville extended its lead going on a 9-4 run to start the second half to lead 49-34. The Tigers then scored nine of the next 10 points to cut their deficit to 50-43 with 14:41 to play. Pikeville would extend its lead to 61-49 with 8:09 to play. Campbellsville went on a 12-2 run to make it a two-point game with 3:46 remaining. The two teams exchanged baskets the rest of the way as Pikeville came away with the 75-71 victory.

The Bears had four players in double figures led by Korbin Spencer who scored 15. Taevon Horton scored 14 points,  Kenyon Duling added 13 and Jacob Brown chipped in with 12. Campbellsville was led by Malachi De Sousa who scored a game-high 22 points.

Pikeville will now take on top-seeded Thomas More (Ky.) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT.


The Mid-South Conference Tournament semifinals are slated for Sunday, Feb. 27 with the finals scheduled for Monday, Feb. 28.
