Ortega Leads with 23 Kills, Firehawks Blow by Bethel

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team sent the Wildcats home with a four-set loss (25-19, 25-16, 23-25, 25-19) on Thursday.

UT Southern (3-2) took control of the match early claiming the first two sets. Bethel (0-2) clawed their way back and held off a late surge by the Firehawks to force a fourth set. UT Southern benefited from some untimely Wildcat errors to close out the match.

Sophia Ortega, SSAC Offensive Player of the Week, led with 23 kills and 10 digs. Morgan Avrit added 19 kills and seven digs. Laura Howell, SSAC Setter of the Week, contributed four kills and 44 assists. Hailey Walker recorded 19 digs, and Isabella Garza added 11 digs in the win for the Firehawks.

NEXT UP

UT Southern will enjoy a week away from competition before traveling to Henderson, Tenn. to compete in the Freed-Hardeman Invitational on September 1st.  UT Southern will face Rust College at 3 p.m. and play the University of Northwestern Ohio at 7 p.m.
