Bears Scratch Firehawks

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team fell in five sets (25-17, 25-14, 19-25, 13-25, 10-15) on Saturday (Oct. 1) against Shawnee State.

For the first two sets the Firehawks had total control, but the Bears quickly got out in front to force a fourth set. SSU would jump to a 17-7 lead and level the match at two. In the final race to 15, both squads would trade blows and the set would be tied at nine all. The Bears would go on a 5-0 run powered by three aces.

Two Firehawks had a double-double in the match. Brianna Turner led with 13 kills on 37 hacks. Morgan Avrit would add 11 terminations, and Sophia Ortega complied 10 kills and 11 digs. Laura Howell contributed 35 assists and 17 digs. Hannah Oliver recorded 16 digs for the Firehawks.
