Lions Outrun Firehawks

HENDERSON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team fell in five sets (23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 29-27, 6-15) on Friday (Sept. 23) against Freed-Hardeman.

The Firehawks battled the Lions close in the first set, but FHU would make a run to take the first set. In set two, UTS would jump to a 6-0 lead, but the home team would roar back and run off seven of the last nine points to take a 2-0 lead. UTS would trade blows with FHU and spoil the Lion's bid for a sweep. In set four, both teams would continue neck and neck play and with the score tied at 27, UTS would take the final two points to go to a fifth set. In the deciding set, the home squad would cruise to victory.

Two Firehawks had a double-double in the match. Brianna Turner led with 18 kills and 20 digs. Morgan Avrit would add 16 kills on 43 swings. Sophia Ortega contributed 13 kills and 12 digs. Laura Howell recorded 43 assists for the Firehawks. Hannah Oliver had 11 digs.

The JV Firehawks swept FHU 2-0.
