Firehawks Double Dip in Home Tri-match

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball rounded up a pair of wins against Faulkner (23-25, 25-23, 25-17, 29-27) and Fisk (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) on Saturday (Sept. 17).

The Firehawks dropped the first set after hanging tough with the Eagles. UTS would jump out to a 15-7 lead in the second stanza and would curb the Eagles to take the second set. The former SSAC foes would go toe-to-toe in the third set, but UTS would have a crucial 7-1 run late in the set to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to start the elimination set. UTS would come back with a 5-0 run to answer the Eagles. The set would be decided in extra points, as there were eight ties in the final 16 points.

Morgan Avrit and Sophia Ortega led with 15 kills each Brianna Turner added 14 terminations on 37 swings. Laura Howell recorded 51 assists for the Firehawks. Hannah Oliver had 24 digs. Both Turner (15 digs) and Ortega (14 digs) each contributed a double-double.

In match two, the Firehawks (5-12) swept the Bulldogs in straight sets.

Turner led the way with 13 kills. Howell gathered 30 helpers. Ortega and Oliver each complied 11 digs.

Tennessee Southern will travel to McKenzie, Tenn., to battle Bethel at 7 p.mon September 20. JV will take on the Wildcats at 5 p.m.
