Firehawks Falter Against Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team dropped their 10th straight match in straight sets (17-25, 23-25, 15-25) on Wednesday (Sept. 14) against Cumberland.

The Phoenix took set one in part to an 8-2 run midway through. UTS got rolling in the second set jumping out to a 3-0 lead. The second set was closely contested with 12 ties. CU would win the final two points to take a two-set lead. The third set started like the second, but the Phoenix would pull away to win the match. 

Morgan Avrit led with nine kills on 26 swings. Laura Howell recorded her 4th double-double in a row with 20 assists and 10 digs. Sophia Ortega (16) and Hannah Oliver (15) each reached double-digit digs for the Firehawks.

The JV Firehawks recorded a 2-1 win over the Phoenix. 

NEXT UP

Tennessee Southern will host a tri-match with Faulkner and Fisk on Sept. 17. UTS and Faulkner will begin the day at noon, Fisk and Faulkner will square off at 2 p.m., and Fisk and the Firehawks will tango at 4 p.m.
