Firehawks Drop Pair to Close Out the Labor Day College Classic

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team fell in straight sets (16-25, 17-25, 11-25) on Saturday (Sept. 3) against #2 Midland.

The Firehawks could not overcome errors in the match and would be overpowered by the Warriors in straight sets.

UTS had four players (Sophia Ortega, Dakota Graham, Angelina Herrera, and Brianna Turner) with four kills each. Laura Howell had seven assists. Hannah Oliver had nine digs.

In match two, the Firehawks (3-9) dropped the odd sets and took the even ones against Briar Cliff (23-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-19, 11-15). The Firehawks battled tough and just came up short in a marathon match.

Morgan Avrit led UTS with 16 kills. Graham added 14 terminations, Turner accumulated 13 kills, and Ortega had 10 enders. Howell had her second double-double, 39 assists, and 14 digs, performance of the weekend. Olivia Cox added 19 assists. Hannah Oliver collected 28 digs and Hailey Walker had 17 digs.

Tennessee Southern will open Mid-South Conference play at the CAC on Wednesday, September 7th. The Firehawks will host Campbellville at 7 p.m. The jv squad will compete at 5 p.m.
