Skyhawks slip by Firehawks, UTS Sweeps Tennessee Wesleyan on Day Two of Vette City Classic

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The University of Tennessee Southern volleyball team fell just short in five sets (25-16, 20-25, 25-17, 23-25, 17-19) on Saturday (Aug. 20) against Point.

Tennessee Southern took advantage of a 12-4 run to take the first set. Point took the momentum taking five of the final seven points claiming set two. The Firehawks fought back with a six-point run early in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage. Point started the fourth set on a mission cruising out to a 10-4 lead, but the Firehawks would fight back and fall short 23-25. In the race to 15, UTS exploded out to a 7-2 lead, but the Skyhawks would scratch back to bring things square at 13. Point would take the rubber set 19-17. 

Five Firehawks would record double-digit kills. Brianna Turner and Morgan Avrit each recorded 14 kills, Dakota Graham added 11, and Sophia Ortega and Ella McIsaac each contributed 10. Laura Howell recorded 31 assists, and Olivia Cox added 23 helpers.

In match two, the Firehawks (2-2) ended the day with a sweep in straight sets (25-11, 25-16, 25-16) over Tennessee Wesleyan. The Firehawks led early and often in all three sets to soar to their second win of the season. 

Ortega had a match-high 13 kills on 18 swings. Howell (13) and Oliva Cox (11) both recorded double-digit assists.

Tennessee Southern travels to Marietta, Ga. to compete in the Runnin' Eagle Classic on Friday, Aug. 26. with matchups with Brenau at 9 a.m. and Life at 2 p.m.
