Uchida’s Brace Fuels Season Opening Win for No. 7 Firehawks

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern women's soccer team scored a pair of goals in each half to defeat former Mid-South Conference foe Pikeville 4-1 tonight. The game was played at Pulaski Rotary Soccer Complex due to challenges with Grissom Pitch.

UPIKE (0-1) had an early shot on goal, but Layken Stockstill would recordher lone save in the match. UT Southern (1-0) would barrage the the Bears outshooting them 13-1. Hikaru Uchida would strike first for the Firehawks finishing the Kamilia Tayebi pass in the 34th minute. In the final minute of the half, Tayebi would net her first of the season from the Marina Nawa pass. UTS would lead 2-nil at the break.

In the second half, the Firehawks would continue dominance over the Bears. UT Southern would add to the lead in the 52nd minute when Uchida would score her second goal of the game form a long assist by Annah Norman. Nawa would strike in the 70th minute on the well-placed Natalia Richartz pass. UT Southern led 4-nil, but UPIKE would slip one by Petra Brncova in the 75th minute. The Firehawks would hold a 29-3 shot advantage and 18-1 shots on goal difference.

Stockstill (1-0) was credited with the win. She faced one shot and recorded one save.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will hit the road to the "Big Easy" to face Xavier (La.) on Thursday, August 24th at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Lafreniere Park in Metairie, La.
