Jones Notches a Double-Double, Firehawks Flatten Toppers

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern women's basketball overcame an early first quarter deficit to win 77-55 over Blue Mountain Christian on Saturday. UT Southern (3-5, 2-3) scored the first basket, but Blue Mountain Christian (3-9, 0-4) would jump out to a 10-4 lead halfway through the opening stanza. The Firehawks would begin to heat up outscoring the Toppers 12-2 to lead 16-12 after one.

In the second period, UT Southern shot nine of twenty from the field to blow open the match enroute to scoring 21 points in the quarter. The Firehawk's defense only allowed the Toppers 10 field goal attempts to open the home team lead to 15 at the break.

To begin the second half, BMC would connect on their first pair of shots shaving the UTS lead to 10, but Kassidy Broussard would answer back with a much-needed triple. Aaryn Grace Lester would make the lead 16 with a layup at the buzzer. UTS led with one quarter left to play 55-39.

The final period a close replay of the second quarter. The UTS defense smothered the Toppers allowing 11 shots of which two were successful. The Firehawks shot 67 percent from the floor (10-15) to complete the rout.

Broussard led all scorers with 22 points. Iya Jones added 13 points and 10 rebounds in the double-double performance. LaRose Morrow scratched for 14 points. Takiyah Goff pitched in 11 in the win. Aaryn Grace Lester pulled down a season high 13 boards.

NEXT UP

UT Southern will to action on Tuesday, December 19th, hosting Fisk. The Firehawks and Bulldogs will clash at noon. The teams met earlier this season in Nashville, UTS defeated Fisk 76-75.
