Goff and Cooper Lead the Way, Flames Consume Firehawks  

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern women's basketball tried to overcome a slow start but ended up falling 60-55 to Welch on Thursday.

Takiyah Goff led the Firehawks with 12 points. Sydney Cooper added 10 points, and Aaryn Grace Lester pitched in five points and 12 rebounds.

Both teams struggled in the opening quarter shooting a combined 5-27 (19%). UTS would lead 6-5. Welch exploded in the second stanza doubling up the Firehawks shooting 50% from the floor to lead 26-20 at the break.

Both teams would shoot 36% in the second half, going 5-14. WC would extend their lead after three to 41-34. UTS would make a run down the stretch but couldn't hit a tying triple.

UTS would shoot 20 of 62 for 32% from the field. There would be five lead changes and one tie.

The Firehawks continue to play at the Curry Athletic Complex on Saturday in Mid-South Conference action taking on the Phoenix of Cumberland on February 4th. Tip-off is slated for 1 p.m.
