Shawnee State Slides by Firehawks in Opening Pair of Weekend Series

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern softball team fell in the first two of the three game series this weekend at Royce Hughes Field. SSU took game one 12-2 and held on to steal game two 4-1 on Friday.

GAME ONE

The Bears scattered eight runs over the first five innings. The Firehawks plated a pair of runs in the fifth to close the gap to 8-2. Stella Gilbreath would single to left scoring Sydney Self and Carlie Pendley.

The Bears added four runs in the six to secure the win.

Ana Aaron would suffer the loss. Aaron would work into the second inning allowing five earned runs on six hits. Kamryn Murdock would toss 4.2 innings. Murdock would give up seven runs on four hits. Bailey Abernathy would record the final out.

GAME TWO

The nightcap would be a pitchers dual. SSU would get on the board with a manufactured run in the fourth. SSU would lead 1-0 after six innings.

The final inning would see four runs scored combined by both teams. SSU would score three in the top half to extend their lead to 4-0.  UTS would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh. Mckenzie Cain would double to right field allowing Self to score.

Gilbreath would toss a complete game taking the loss. She would allow four earned runs on nine hits.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will close out the regular season with the series finale tomorrow at Royce Hughes Field. Tomorrow will be senior day with the festivities beginning before the game. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
