Firehawks Smother Shawnee State, Advance to MSC Semifinals

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern men's soccer team dispatched Shawnee State for the second time this season via a 2-nil win on Friday, November 4. UTS will advance to host the MSC semifinals being held on November 9th at Grissom Pitch.

In the opening half, both teams would have some great chances but could not take advantage leaving the score level and nil-nil. UTS would lead in shots 6-5.

In the second half, the Firehawks would ignite scoring a pair of goals. Manuel Otero would net the game-winner off a set piece. Manuel Flores, from Carlos Galan, would add an insurance goal later in the period. The Firehawks would outshoot the Bears 14-9 and would lead shots-on-goal 9-3.

Ajay Murray recorded three saves on three chances sealing the clean sheet. He improved to 13-3-1 on the season between the sticks.

GRISSOM PITCH, HOME OF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Grissom Pitch has a storied history of championship teams and memorable seasons. This legendary field will host the 2022 Mid-South Conference Men's Soccer Championships. The semifinal round will be contested on Wednesday, November 9, and the finals will be held on Friday, November 11.

MSC QUARTERFINAL RESULTS

  • Fourth seed Lindsey Wilson defeated fifth seed Cumberland 3-0.
  • Top-seed Tennessee Southern defeated ninth-seed Shawnee State 2-0.
    • Lindsey Wilson will take on Tennessee Southern.
  • Third seed #24 Cumberlands defeated sixth seed Campbellsville 2-1 in double overtime.
  • Second seed Bethel defeated seventh seed Thomas More 3-2 in double overtime.
    • #24 Cumberlands will take on Bethel.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will host the MSC semifinals facing third seed Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday, November 9th. UTS defeated LWC during the regular season 1-0 at Grissom Pitch.
