Firehawks Use Long-Ball to Split Twin Bill with Barons

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team split the opening two games of the weekend series with Brewton-Parker on Friday. UTS walked of a win in game one 11-10 and came up short in game two 8-7.

GAME ONE

Brewton-Parker drew first blood scoring one in the first inning. Landon Rogers answered with a solo home run. Later in the inning, Kevin McCarthy blasted a three-run homer scoring Blake Birdsong and Gabe Sibert. UTS led 4-1.

The Barons plated three runs in the second, two runs in the third, and three runs in the fourth to take the lead back 9-4 heading to the fifth.

In the fifth, Sibert cleared the left field wall adding a UTS run. A few batters later, McCarthy would hit his second homer of the game scoring Rhett Birdsong. UTS trailed 9-7 with two innings left.

In the sixth, BPC added one more run on a round tripper. Devin Buckhalter answered back in the bottom half, blasting a ball off the scoreboard.  R. Birdsong singled to left driving in Sibert and Noah Junker. Both teams were tied at 10.

In the bottom of the seventh, Junker would lace a double down the right field line scoring Rogers for the win.

Josh Simmons got the start and worked three innings. Simmons allowed four earned runs on seven hits. Griffin Sahli tossed three innings allowing four earned runs. Cody Edwards took the win tossing a perfect seventh inning striking out two.

GAME TWO

Brewton-Parker scored two runs in the first to take the early lead. R. Birdsong doubled to right center scoring Junker. McCarthy hit his third home run of the day scoring R. Birdsong. UTS led 3-2 after one.

BPC added two runs in the second to tie the game at three.

In the third, Rogers homered to left center. UTS regained the lead 4-3.

The Barons scored a pair in the fourth to ump back in front 5-4. Blake Birdsong scored via a passed ball. UTS led 6-5 after four complete innings.

In the fifth, BPC scored three runs to lead 8-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Rogers came home via a wild pitch.

Tray Lacy got the start and tossed four innings. Lacy allowed eight earned runs on nine hits. Weston Horton tossed the final five innings allowing two hits.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will conclude the series with Brewton-Parker tomorrow at Bobby Walker Field. The First pitch is scheduled for noon.
