McCarthy Drives in Six, Firehawks Run Rule Blue Radiers

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team scored early and often in a 16-6 rout of former Mid-South Conference opponent Lindsey Wilson on Wednesday.

Kevin McCarthy doubled to right center scoring Rhett Birdsong, Chandler Jordan, and Cannon Raby. UTS led 3-0 after one.

In the third, Lindsey Wilson scored a pair of runs to shave the Firehawk lead to one. UT Southern responded with two more runs in the bottom of the inning. R. Birdsong doubled to center scoring Blake Birdsong. McCarthy singled to second driving in R. Birdsong. UTS led 5-3 heading to the fourth.

In the fifth, the Blue Raiders added three runs to tie the game at five. UTS would double that in the bottom half to jump back into the lead. McCarthy tripled to left scoring R. Birdsong and B. Birdsong. Coleman Siniard doubled down the left field line plating McCarthy. Landon Rogers singled to center driving in Zach Chaney and Ty Garrett. Jordan hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Grayson Willis. UTS led 11-5 going to the sixth.

LWC added a run in the top of the sixth. Rogers singled to short scoring McCarthy. Devin Buckhalter drew a free pass pushing Garrett across the plate. After six innings, UTS led 13-6.

In the seventh, Chaney singled through the left side scoring R. Birdsong and B. Birdsong. Rogers received the walk off walk to end the game early.

Caiden Rodgers got the win on the pitch by committee game. Rodgers tossed three innings allowing two earned runs. Gerry Wayne Davis hurled a pair of innings allowing three earned runs. Zach Neill tossed 0.1 innings giving up one unearned run. Weston Horton worked the final 1.2 innings allowing two hits.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will return to road traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a weekend series with William Carey. The Firehawks and Crusaders will play a double header on Saturday, March 23rd beginning at one p.m.
