Firehawks Comeback Effort Falls Short to No. 18 Rams

MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team trailed 9-3 heading into the fifth, but #18 Mobile survived to win 9-8 on Saturday.

UT Southern (3-11, 0-3) started with a run in the first inning. Kevin McCarthy blasted a long fly out of Jacobs Field. In the bottom of the inning, Mobie (4-6, 3-0) scored a pair of runs on a Ram round tripper. UM led 2-1 after one.

Mobile would score five runs in the second to lead 7-1 after two.

In the fourth, Blake Birdsong's extra base hit scored Landon Rogers. Later in the inning, Coleman Siniard doubled sriving home Birdsong. UM would push two more across the plate in the fourth to lead 9-3.

In the fifth, Rogers would double to left driving in Devin Buckhalter. UTS drew closer to the Rams trailing by five.

The Firehawks would score four in the sixth to threaten the Rams. Buckhalter singled up the middle scoring Siniard. McCarthy singled to right driving in Buckhalter and Rhett Birdsong. Later in the inning, Brantley Holden would score on a wild pitch. UTS narrowed the gap to 9-8 after six.

Ridge Raper tossed 1.2 innings in the start taking the loss. Raper allowed four earned runs on five hits. Griffin Sahli tossed 5.1 innings in relief. Sahli allowed two earned runs on three hits.  Gerry Wayne Davis tossed the eighth only allowing one hit.

NEXT UP

UT Southern will travel to Henderson, Tenn., to open former TSAC/MSC foe Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday, February 27th. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
