Firehawks Fall in Ninth to Phoenix

LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team led 5-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth, but Cumberland squeaked out a pair of runs in the inning to defeat the Firehawks 6-5 on Tuesday.

UT Southern (3-8) started with a pair of runs in the first inning. Landon Rogers blasted a long drive out of Woody Hunt Stadium to get the Firehawks on the board first. Later in the inning, Cole Barnett reached on a CU throwing error as Rhett Birdsong would cross the plate. UTS led 2-0 after one.

In the second, Rogers would double to left scoring Devin Buckhalter. UTS padded their lead to 3-0.

In the fourth, the Firehawks would add another run when Buckhalter singled to center driving in Ty Garrett. UTS led 4-0 heading to the bottom of the fourth. Cumberland (4-7) scored a run to draw closer to the Firehawks at 4-1.

CU would add another run in the fifth, seventh, and eighth to draw even with UTS heading to the ninth.

The Firehawks would retake the lead when Noah Junk singled to center scoring Buckhalter. However, CU would blast a two run walk off homer to take the win.

Cody Edwards tossed three innings in the start. Edwards allowed one earned run and struck out six. Logan Parrott hurled two innings allowing one earned run. Weston Horton worked one inning without allowing a hit. Josh Simmons tossed two innings allowing a pair of earned runs. Gerry Wayne Davis (0-3) took the loss working 0.1 innings and allowing two earned runs.

NEXT UP

UT Southern will travel to Mobile, Ala., to open SSAC play with Mobile. The three-game weekend series will begin on Friday, February 23rd, with a twin bill beginning at three pm.
