Firehawks Spilt Season Opener with Ottawa

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team opened up the 2024 season on Friday with a doubleheader split with Ottawa. UTS won an exciting 2-1 game one, and Ottawa returned the favor taking game two 5-4 at Bobby Walker Field. Both teams will conclude the four game series tomorrow at the "Bob" beginning at noon.

GAME ONE

UT Southern (1-0) scored a pair in the third inning to get on the board first. Blake Birdsong singled to right scoring Rhett Birdsong lifting the Firehawks to a 1-0 lead. Ty Garrett would pile one more on finding the left field grass. Garretts single scored Kevin McCarthy.

In the sixth, Ottawa (0-1) would get one back via a solo homer.

Tray Lacy got the start. Lacy fanned five Braves batters and allowed two hits in five innings of work. Josh Simmons earned the first save of the season tossing the final pair of innings allowing one earned run and striking out three.

GAME TWO

UT Southern (1-1) once again got on the board early, scoring a pair in the first inning. Josh Porter singled down the right field line driving in Landon Rogers and Noah Junker. UTS led 2-0 after one inning.

In the second, McCarthy tacked on one run via his single to right that scored Junker. UTS held the 3-0 lead after two.

Ottawa (1-1) scored three in the fourth to draw back even. The Braves also added a pair in the fifth inning to lead 5-3 after four and a half innings.

UTS took advantage of a deep sacrifice fly by Cole Barnett allowing to score Porter. UTS got back to within one after five complete innings.

Logan Parrott got the start in game two. Parrott tossed 3.2 innings allowing three earned runs and recording three strikeouts. Gerry Wayne Davis suffered the loss pitching the final 3.1 innings. Davis allowed a pair of earned runs and recorded a pair of strikeouts.

NEXT UP

UT Southern will conclude the four game series with Ottawa tomorrow at Bobby Walker Field. The Firehawks and Braves will begin game three at noon on Saturday, February 3rd, with game four to follow.
