Firehawks Force Game Three but Fall in a Heartbreaker to Bears

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team needed to win both games contested at Bobby Walker Field on Sunday to advance to the MSC final site. UTS evened the series with Pikeville winning game two 6-5 but dropped the rubber game in heartbreaking fashion by a score of 11-10.

GAME TWO

UPIKE would get on the board first scoring a run in the first.

UTS would answer with a three-spot in the third. Michael Wurtz would double to left scoring Janzen Powell. Kevin McCarthy would single to center scoring Brantley Holden. Coleman Siniard would single up the middle scoring Wurtz. UTS would lead 3-1 after three innings.

UPIKE would score one in the fourth and add a pair in the seventh to retake the lead 4-3.

In the Firehawk half of the seventh, Wurtz would single scoring Holden and Landon Rogers. Josh Porter would single scoring McCarthy. UTS would reclaim the lead 6-4 after seven.

Nathan Curtis would cinch the win by hurling seven innings. Curtis would allow four runs on eight hits and fanning five Bear batters.  Gerry Wayne Davis would toss one inning allowing one earned run on one hit. Josh Simmons would record the save striking out one batter.

GAME THREE

UPIKE would get on the board first scoring two runs in the first. UTS would answer with a three-spot of their own. Rogers would hit a round-tripper scoring Holden. Blake Birdsong would put one in play scoring Wurtz. Later in the inning, Ty Garrett would hit a sacrifice fly scoring McCarthy. UTS would lead 4-3 after one.

Trailing 8-4 in the fourth, the Firehawks would draw the game back to all square. Holden would be hit by a pitch pushing Ty Garrett across the plate. Rogers would also reach via a hit by pitch scoring Cannon Raby. Wurtz would hit a sac fly scoring Garrett. Siniard would hit a sac fly driving in Holden. Both teams would be deadlocked at eight.

After UPIKE scored a pair in the sixth, the Firehawks would add a pair to even the game. McCarthy would single to left scoring Holden. Birdsong would single up the middle driving in Rogers.

UPIKE would hit a solo homer in the seventh that would be the deciding run in the game.

Weston Horton would get the start tossing three innings. Horton would allow four runs on four hits. Cody Womble would record a pair of outs in the fourth. Womble allowed four earned runs on two hits. Tray Lacy would suffer the loss working 3.1 innings. Lacy would allow three earned runs on four hits and would record five strikeouts. Logan Parrott would toss the final two innings. Parrott would fan three Bear batters

Logan Parrott would suffer his second loss of the year. Parrott would hurl two innings allowing five runs on six hits. Griffin Sahli would toss 4.1 innings allowing seven earned runs on 10 hits. Joe Hicks would work a third of an inning. Hicks would allow three walks and strike out one. Cody Edwards would finish the game tossing 2.1 innings. Edwards would allow one earned run on one hit and fan four Bear batters.
