No. 23 Phoenix Outlast Firehawks in Regular Season Finale

LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team dropped the season finale with #23 Cumberland on Friday. CU took the game 22-5. With the scattering of the final regular season weekend, the Firehawks will await the outcome of two key series that would affect what seed UTS would be in the MSC Championship.

The Lindsey Wilson and Freed-Hardeman series will begin tonight at 6 pm and conclude with a twin bill on Saturday. FHU currently is a ½ game ahead of the Firehawks. UTS would jump the Lions if they would drop a pair to the Blue Raiders.

The Bethel and Campbellsville series will begin tomorrow with a doubleheader at 2 pm and conclude on Sunday. Campbellsville is a ½ game behind the Firehawks. UTS would need the Wildcats to win at least two to stay ahead of the Tigers in the standings.

GAME THREE

UTS would get on the board in the first with a solo homer by Michael Wurtz. CU would lead after one 3-1.

The Firehawks would add another pair in the third. Wurtz would smash another homer scoring Brantley Holden. The Phoenix would lead 6-3 after three.

In the fifth, Holden would single up the middle scoring Janzen Powell. After five innings CU would lead 13-4.

In the sixth, Coleman Siniard would blast one out of Woody Hunt Park. UTS would close the gap trailing 13-5 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Logan Parrott would suffer his first loss of the year working 3.2 innings. Parrott would allow nine earned runs on six hits. Cody Womble would get the final out of the fourth. Womble would allow four earned runs on five hits. Josh Simmons would work one inning allowing two earned runs on two hits. Gerry Wayne Davis would allow three earned runs on three hits. Cody Edwards would allow four earned runs on one hit. Joe Hicks would toss the final inning. Hicks would allow one walk and strike out three.

The opening round will be a best two-out-of-three format. The winners of each opening round series will advance to play at Bowling Green Ballpark, home to the Hot Rods.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will await the Mid-South Championship bracket to be released next week. UTS could host an MSC Opening round series at Bobby Walker Field beginning Friday, April 28th.
