Firehawks Sweep Season Series with Oakwood, Baseball logs Win Number 30 on the Year

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team swept the Ambassaors in the final pair of games of the regular season to be contested at Bobby Walker field tonight. UTS won game one 18-0 and took game two 23-2. The Firehawks eclipsed the 30-win threshold for the season. This is the first time since the 2013 season. The RedHawks produced a 38-19 record winning the TranSouth Athletic Conference Tournament and making the programs only appearance in the NAIA National Championship.

GAME ONE

UTS would get started early scoring a pair in the opening frame. Devin Buckhalter would double down the left field line scoring Cannon Raby. Collin Huntley would single to center scoring Buckhalter. UTS would lead 2-0 after one.

The Firehawks would ignite posting an eight-spot in the second. Trent Rhinehart would get things started drawing a free pass pushing Buckhalter across the plate. Cooper Mann would single to right scoring Nick Davis and Chandler Jordan Grayson Willis would be hit by a pitch driving in Rhinehart. Mann would later score on a wild pitch. Buckhalter would single to left driving in Gerry Wayne Davis and Willis would score on a bobble by Oakwood. UTS would lead 10-0 after two.

In the third, G.W. Davis would reach after being hit by a pitch allowing Nick Davis to score. Willis would reach on a fielder's choice allowing Rhinehart to score and Mann would score on an Ambassador error. Raby would single to right scoring Willis. UTS would lead 15-0 after three.

In the fourth, Chandler Jordan doubled to left scoring Mann and N. Davis. Raby would single through the middle scoring Willis. UTS would lead 18-0 after four.

Connor Marlin would toss the complete game taking the win. Marlin would allow three hits while striking out seven.

N. Davis (3) would almost tie the NAIA record for most times being hit by a pitch in a game. 

GAME TWO

UTS would take the early in the first. Huntley would homer to right driving in Josh Porter and Jordan. Mann would single to right scoring N. Davis. UTS would lead 4-0 after one.

In the second, Jordan would hit a sacrifice fly scoring Raby. J. Porter would homer to left plating Devin Buckhalter. Mann would single to first. Huntley would score on the play. N. Davis would score on a wild pitch. Trevier Porter would single to left center scoring Mann. Buckhalter would reach on an error allowing T. Porter to score. UTS would hold the lead after two at 10-0.

In the third, Mann would single through the middle scoring J. Porter. Huntley would score on a passed ball. Raby would double to left center scoring Mann and N. Davis. Jordan would reach on an error driving in T. Porter and allowing Raby to score on the error. Huntley would double to right center scoring Jordan and Buckhalter. Mann would single to short scoring J. Porter. Zach Hayes would reach on a walk pushing Huntley across the plate. T. Porter would hit a sacrifice fly to score N. Davis. UTS would blow the game open at 22-2 after three.

In the fourth, Cody Womble would drive a sacrifice fly scoring Jordan.

Blake Birdsong would toss two innings in the no-decision. Birdsong would not allow any hits and strike out two. Justin Beachler would take the win. Beachler would toss two innings allowing thee hits and a pair of runs. He would record five strikeouts. Cody Edwards would toss one inning allowing one hit and logging three strikeouts.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will close out the regular season with a three-game set with Cumberland in Lebanon, Tenn. on Thursday, April 20th. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
