Firehawks Split Senior Day Twin Bill with Lions

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team split a twin bill with Freed on Saturday. UTS won game one 5-2 and fell in game two 9-5. Nathan Curtis, Collin Huntley, Nick Davis, Noah Junker, Joe Hicks, Janzen Powell, Cooper Mann, Kevin McCarthy, Michael Wurtz, and Connor Marlin were celebrated today between the pair of matches.

GAME ONE

Freed jumped out to a 2-0 lead heading to the UTS half of the sixth.

UTS would answer with a yahtzee in the sixth. Janzen Powell would blast a two-run homer scoring Blake Birdsong. Landon Rogers would double scoring Noah Junker and Brantley Holden. Rogers would score on a wild pitch later in the inning.

Griffin Sahli would toss five innings in the start. Sahli would allow one earned run on seven hits. Gerry Wayne Davis would take the win. Davis would work one inning allowing one run on three hits. Josh Simmons would record the save. Simmons would toss one inning and record a pair of strikeouts.

GAME TWO

Freed would again jump out to a 2-0 lead after three innings.

Michael Wurtz would double to left center in the fourth scoring Rogers and Holden. Later in the inning, Collin Huntley would single to right scoring Wurtz. UTS would hold the 3-2 lead after four.

In the fifth, Wurtz would single driving in Rogers and Holden. UTS would trail 6-5 after five.

Nathan Curtis would toss 4.1 innings in the start. Curtis would allow six earned runs on six hits in the loss. Weston Horton would toss 2.2 innings allowing a pair of runs on a pair of hits. Devin Buckhaulter would work one inning. Birdsong would toss the final frame. Birdsong would allow one earned run on two hits.

The Firehawks will conclude the series hosting Freed-Hardeman on Monday, April 7th. The first pitch is scheduled for 3 pm.
