Firehawks Dethrone Royals in Extra Innings

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team took a win in the top of the 11th from Johnson University winning 10-9 on Tuesday. UTS recorded their 26th win on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Firehawks would explode in the first jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Michael Wurtz would drive a two run double into right field scoring Noah Junker and Brantley Holden. Kevin McCarthy would single to right scoring Wurtz. Josh Porter would single to left scoring McCarthy.

In the fourth, Landon Rogers would single to left scoring Janzen Powell. The Firehawks would lead 5-3 after four.

Rogers would score on a JU wild pitch. UTS held the lead at 6-4 through six innings.

In the eighth, Porter would single to right scoring Wurtz. UTS would hold the lead at 7-6 through eight innings.

The Royals would score a run in the ninth to force free baseball.

In the eleventh, McCarthy would hit a sacrifice fly to left allowing Holden to score. A few batters later, Porter would single to left scoring Wurtz and Cannon Raby.

JU would blast a two-run homer in the final half, but UTS would hold on to bring the win back to Pulaski.

Weston Horton would get the start. Horton would work three inning allowing two earned runs on five hits and fanning four. Gerry Wayne Davis would hurl a pair of innings. Davis would allow one earned run on two hits. Joe Hicks would record a pair of outs allowing one earned run on two hits. Devin Buckhaulter would retire two Royal batters allowing two runs on a pair of hits. Josh Simmons would toss 2.2 innings allowing one earned run and striking out four. Cody Edwards would work the final two innings allowing two runs on a pair of hits.

The Firehawks will return to Bobby Walker Field hosting Freed-Hardeman on Friday, April 7th. The first pitch is scheduled for 6 pm.
