Firehawks Thwart Wildcats in Return to Kahlden Complex

McKENZIE, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team overpowered rival Bethel in game one of the three game set 12-1 and foil a Wildcat win in a late inning comeback by the count of 5-3 in the opening pair of games today. This was the first games contested at the Kahlden Complex since the venue suffered damage back in early March.

GAME ONE

Michael Wurtz would blast a three-run bomb in the first Scoring Landon Rogers and Noah Junker. UTS led 3-0 after one.

Rogers would launch a solo shot in the third extending the lead to 4-0. Later in the inning Blake Birdsong would reach on a BU error allowing Coleman Siniard and Kevin McCarthy to score. Junker would single scoring Powell and Birdsong. Rogers would also single scoring Brantley Holden. UTS would have a commanding lead of 9-0.

Birdsong would single allowing McCarthy to score in the sixth. The Firehawks held the lead 10-1.

Junker would join the home run barrage, blasting a two-run shot in the seventh scoring Holden.

Griffin Sahli would handcuff the Wildcat batters allowing one earned run on three hits. Sahli would record eight strikeouts in this second win of the year.

GAME TWO

Bethel would jump out to a two-run lead scoring a run in each of the first frames.

Josh Porter would get UTS on the board in the third scoring McCarthy. UTS would trail 2-1 after three.

Ty Garrett would single in the seventh scoring Porter and Wurtz. UTS would tie the match at three after seven innings.

McCarthy would single in the eighth scoring Devin Buckhalter. Wurtz would single plating Rogers. UTS would hold on for the 5-3 win.

Nathan Curtis would toss seven innings picking up his fifth win of the season. He would give up three earned runs on three hits and retire seven Wildcat batters on strikes. Gerry Wayne Davis would hurl the final two innings allowing two hits and recording three strike outs.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will close out the weekend series with Bethel on Sunday, April 2nd. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.
