Firehawks Ambush Ambassadors, Take Mid-Week Twinbill

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team blasted past Oakwood in the "Rocket City" 17-0 and 16-0 on Wednesday. Both games were shortened to try to beat the incoming threat of inclement weather.

GAME ONE

The UTS offense sprayed the baseball around John Hunt Park. Powered by three round-trippers by Blake Birdsong, Ty Garrett, and Zach Hayes. Brantley Holden added a triple, and Cannon Raby, Kevin McCarthy, and Grayson Willis each had doubles. The filching Firehawks swiped some bases in the game as well. Landon Rogers led with two steals, and Holden, McCarthy, Devin Buchhalter, and Justin Beachler lifted a bag.

UTS would make the Ambassadors pay in the first cashing in two runs from a pair of Oakwood errors.

The Firehawks would immolate the field in the second inning scoring nine runs to take an 11-0 lead.

UTS would push two runs across in the third, fourth, and fifth to cruise to a 17-0 win.

Weston Horton would secure the shutout win moving to 1-1 on the year. Horton tossed three innings allowing a single hit and striking out six Oakwood batters. Beachler would toss the final pair of innings. He would allow two hits and fan three batters.

UTS would plate 14 earned runs on 12 hits against Ambassador pitching.

GAME TWO

UTS would score in each inning in game two to overwhelm Oakwood 16-0. Rogers, Michael Wurtz, and Gerry Wayne Davis would lead the offense with triples. Noah Junker and McCarthy would add a two-bagger each.

On the base paths, Janzen Powell would swipe four bases. Rogers and Junker would contribute three steals each, and Nick Davis would also swipe a base.

Joe Hicks took the win in game two and improved to 2-1 on the season. Hicks hurled four innings allowing a pair of hits and fanning 11 Oakwood batters. Birdsong would finish the game by striking out three in the final inning.

The Firehawks would score 10 earned runs on seven hits and take advantage of 12 free passes.
