Firehawks Fall in Game One to Bears

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team dropped the first game of the weekend series with Shawnee State by a score of 12-8 on Saturday. UTS suffered their first Mid-South Conference loss falling to 12-6 (2-1) on the year.

SCORING RECAP

In the fifth inning trailing by three, Landon Rogers doubled to right center scoring Zach Hayes. Noah Junker would put the ball in play scoring Grayson Willis to close the gap to 3-2.

In the sixth, Blake Birdsong would double to center scoring Kevin McCarthy. Heading to the bottom of the sixth UTS would trail 5-3.

In the eighth, Birdsong would single-plating McCarthy. Ty Garrett would score via a delayed steal. Later in the inning, Rogers would single to left scoring Birdsong. The Firehawks would trail 8-6.

In the ninth, Brantley Holden would score on a wild pitch. Chandler Jordan would come home on McCarthy's RBI ground out.

Nathan Curtis would get the start tossing five innings allowing five earned runs on eight hits. Curtis would fan seven SSU batters. Gerry Wayne Davis and Devin Buckhaulter would combine for 2.1 innings of work. They would allow six earned runs on four hits. Griffin Sahli would toss the final two outs allowing an unearned run on two hits.

The Firehawks will conclude the weekend set with Shawnee State tomorrow, March 5. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 am.
