Firehawks Beach Crimson Wave, Lead Series 2-0

PULASKI, Tenn. – The University of Tennessee Southern baseball team started the season out on fire sweeping day one of a four-game series with Calumet College of St. Joseph on Saturday. The Firehawks won game one 14-3 and outlasted the Crimson Wave 7-6 in 8 innings in game two.

GAME ONE

Landon Rogers ignited the Firehawks with a first-pitch round-tripper. Later in the first, Blake Birdsong would be hit by a pitch to walk in another run.

In the third, UTS would double up their lead with a pair of bases-loaded runs. Rogers would draw a free pass that would walk a run home. Cannon Raby would reach on a base hit scoring another.

The next inning, the bats would still be ablaze. Collin Huntley would add another run with his RBI double. Zac Hayes would blast the second of three homers for the Firehawks bringing the score through four innings to 7-0.

In the fifth, UTS would plate seven runs. Michael Wurtz would launch a three-run home run. Sam Bowling, Rogers, and Raby would all single in runs.

Nathan Curtis would get the start in the pitch-by-committee game. Curtis would hurl 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball recording five strikeouts. He would allow three hits and three walks. Griffin Sahli would record three strikeouts in 1.1 innings. Josh Simmons would mop up game one tossing two innings and allowing three earned runs.

GAME TWO

UTS would get on the board first on a Huntley sac fly in the first.

Chandler Jordan would score on a balk, and Huntley would add a pair of RBIs on a double. Janzen Powell would reach on a dropped third strike and Hunltey would score to give the Firehawks a 5-1 lead after three.

Powell would drive in a run in the fifth to tack on a sixth UTS run in the fifth inning.

Calumet would score one in the sixth and four in the seventh to give the crowd some free baseball.

The Firehawks would manufacture a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Wurtz sac fly to record the win.

Logan Parrott would allow one earned run in 3.1 innings of work. Tray Lacy would allow one earned run in 2.2 innings of work fanning seven batters. Devin Buckhalter would allow two earned runs and a pair of unearned runs pitching a third of an inning. Cody Edwards would finish up the game by striking out five and recording the win.

NEXT UP

The Firehawks will close out the four-game series with Calumet at Bobby Walker Field tomorrow beginning at 11 am.
